Will changing the name of that splash image in the course file have any affect when you are trying to play a multi-player game if the other players still have theirs named the original splash instead of splash.png? We won't get the tool tip during the loading of the game will we?

The splash should be renamed to the same name as in the course folder. The change will have no effect on gameplay.
Bear in mind that steam verification of the game will bring back the original splash pics in courses that came with game.
